Oliver covers some great news but the jokes are so terrible sometimes, it can get grating to watch. Bee is funnier but I wish her segments were longer.

Oliver is horrible. Not funny in the least. When his joke isn't hitting, he starts yelling. If that doesn't hit, he drops an F-bomb. It's cheap and formulaic. He's terrible.

Let's congratulate PD on his new job.

http://www.npr.org/2016/07/02/484407962/election-escapism-fan-fiction-for-the-2016-candidates

Fan fiction used to be reserved for themost diehard devotees of fantasy novels and boy bands – but it's made its way into this election.

Fictional stories written about characters or real people can be found at almost every corner of the internet – subjects range from television shows like Game of Thrones, book series like Harry Potter, and celebrities like Beyonce and Jay-Z. Fan fiction websites are home to millions of stories – Archive of Our Own hosts over 2 million alone, almost a thousand of which feature politicians.

Fan fiction has developed a reputation for being sexual in nature, and while that be true for a great deal of what's out there, political authors are using the medium to explore different aspects of the candidates' personalities.

He does do some deep dives which I like but they're often tough to get through. Bee really does it the best. Wish she would have gotten a daily show (haha) or weekly hour

I find him funny, but his reporting is actually good quality and he generally hits important topics so I think there's value even if your humor doesn't align with his.

Australia is a mess.

Probably going to have a minority conservative government, with a right faction that want to knife the PM, who probably would've won easily if he was allowed to be as moderate as he actually is.

We elected three white nationalists and a theocrat to the senate, where they'll probably hold the balance of power.

Disagree. His deep dives are like nothing else on TV, they can be really interesting even if you don't like his humor (I do). See: Our lady of perpetual exemption. Also the recent Retirement one was pretty good, or so I thought. Especially since it's not like young people (aka his audience) are going to be giving it much thought.

I'd rank them Bee > Oliver > Noah > Wilmore (I don't even really watch the Nightly Show TBH, not interested in panel shows in the slightest).

Samantha Bee has been fantastic, really wish we got more material of hers each week, I'd kill for a daily Full Frontal.

Because I'm old and boring I went to bed at like 9. And I had a dream Hillary announced her Veep choice like at this musical stage show. And she asked all the possible people on stage, and did a little sketch with each one. Then at the end, she came out dressed as a Power Ranger with a person dressed as Goldar. Then she took her helmet off and then Goldar took his off... And it was Warren. And Hillary said I'm with her... And then sparks and confetti went everywhere. And Hillary grabbed Warren and told her not to fuck it up or else. Then I woke up.....

Oliver is funny, but a lot of his stuff is pretty forced, like when he makes a side joke and does it for 15 seconds screaming saying "NO, YOU CAN'T DO THAT" or something.

His delivery for just doing the segment is top notch, actual joke stuff is kinda flat.

Bee is just ace all around, so she gets the edge over Oliver.

Brianna Wu says transgender individuals being able to serve in the military is good even if the military has done bad things and that diversity in the military could be helpful for making the military more aware of possible human rights violations. Salon.com has thoughts.

It's okay for the military to kill people of color in Global South, as long as it has diverse leadership

Socialists HATE her so much for liking Hillary Clinton and... making $80,000 a year? I like Brianna Wu, she's a fine person, Jill Stein is trash, get over it.

Agreed.

I like the range of topics he covers on his show, but he's terribly unfunny. And on the rare occasion that he does hit a good line, he does that annoying thing where he tries to hit the punchline over and over again, all while laughing very loudly at his own joke. Like even he's surprised.

For all the politics-based comedy shows I watch, he's the lousiest when it comes to comedy. And when I'm putting you below Bill Maher, that's saying something.

I don't think Trevor Noah is nearly as bad as people think. But Samantha Bee slays them all.

this is spot on lmao. He loves screaming at pictures in the corner of his screen.

I don't think Trevor is unfunny, and tbh I don't really think the Daily Show even really needs to be all that funny, but his aloof presentation is offputting to me. Just makes me feel like he's not invested in what he's talking about.

Being more "into it" and showing he cares about the subjects he's covering would make it a lot better.

He may not be the funniest guy out there, but his show is still great, and covers a lot of topics very well. Him and his team are doing good work.

His deep dives are usually pretty slanted. That's fine if you always agree with him, but it just takes one where you're like "that's not really an accurate way to explain X" to make you start questioning all of them.

I dunno, I still love John Oliver's segment about how if the climate change debate was actually balanced it'd be like 40 people arguing against 1 instead of 1 v 1.

True. Felt that way about a few of his segments. Especially the primary thing he did

Noah's problem is that he's the guy following the legend. That never works well.

Also, am I the only one who thinks that if Noah got a show on HBO to shape around his talents and interests, while Oliver had to literally do the exact same format as his predecessor, we'd be having the exact opposite conversation right now? Like, of course, Sam Bee and John Oliver's shows are better-they got to build them! The promos for Noah's TDS were literally, "this is the exact same show you've been watching, with a darker guy in the chair. Don't freak out."

Also, this is (I think) my first official post in PoliGAF! I can officially add this thread to the college football thread (go Bucks!) to my GAF list of, "threads I read all day, but never participate in".

Oh, bitch bitch bitch.
Sam Bee is funnier and is closer to Stewart. But LWT's willingness to do segments about so many oft overlooked topics or issues that arent particularly sexy to cover make him more indispensable IMO. His show also cares more about world politics than the others.

And yes maybe Noah would be better doing his own thing, but he isnt, so its a moot point.

I think that's an overstatement, but I do agree he reaches into the same bag of tricks too often. Him yelling at the picture to his right is always cringeworthy. Also, way too many simile jokes; just count the number of times he says "and that's like..."

The show certainly deserves praise for tackling serious subject matter, but it gets too much credit for the ability to wring humor out of everything because it's a bit too obvious how they do it.

That said, And Now This is often genius and the guy who does that voice over is a national treasure.

Bee is great. Colbert is still my favorite, but he's sort of out of the game now. I've accepted that his Late Show will never be the Colbert Report and am enjoying it for what it is.

Noah's not good. I do feel he deserves more time, but I'm afraid he's always going to look happy to be there. The tone of the show just fit Stewart's weariness better, not to mention that he seemed genuinely angry. Do check out Noah's standup though: he's quite good when he can really be himself.

And also check out his appearance on QI - funny and very charming.

I'm not slamming Oliver's show--the topics it covers are important and they do a great job of exposing things that need to be shown.

All I was doing was commenting on the man himself, who I find insufferable.

I wonder if he will pivot to Trump. There have been a few articles by other journalist written about him saying he comes off less as a Democrat and more as someone who is obsessively anti-Hillary.
Didn't he (H.A. Goodman) back a libertarian recently (pre-2016 race)? He's not exactly a progressive as he is an anti-establishment guy.

Then again, I'm not a progressive anymore either, I just don't write Berner fan-fic.

Yeah. I laugh a little (often at the openers or And Now This), but not much else... But I still find it well worth watching.

I mean, half of John Stewart's schtick was making odd faces and giving everyone a Jewish New Yorker accent when he was making fun of them. Comedians tend to draw from the same wells when it works.

Wow Plinko nailed Oliver 100%.

NO, FUCK YOU, [name of child], YOU CAN'T HAVE [exaggerated thing I am talking about]. FUCK YOU, [name of child]. YOU'LL GET [thing we have that sucks] AND YOU'LL LIKE IT, you [English insult + wanker].

Welcome, you should post more!

I think you have a good point, the format and every night schedule is pretty hard to do and Stewart and Colbert were just masters at it.

Bee and Oliver definitely made the right call making their own new shoes that play to their strengths, but Noah is an unknown quantity to me so I'm not sure how he'd do with a different format

While there are other names under consideration — including New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker, Labor Secretary Tom Perez (a favorite of many people who are on Clinton’s team after having previously served in President Barack Obama’s administration), and Minnesota Sen. Al Franken — Kaine remains the odds-on favorite to get the job, say people close to Clinton

The Kaine train has left the station.
