Enter The Gungeon |OT| Praise the gun

Just did three play-throughs with my brother, who knew nothing about this game except what I told him about it from PAX South.

He loved it. We made it to the third level in one of our play-throughs.

The final version of this game is definitely delivering. I love the large variety of enemies. There were some I hadn't even seen while I was playing it at PAX.
Also, took a look at the list of guns available... Wow. They made a LOT of guns.

I played it until I died at the second boss, which, by the way, is the eye thing from Big Trouble In Little China.

I laughed too hard at the first boss.

This is probably the best impulse purchase I've had in a long time.

I really want to buy it, but I already own so much stuff, DkS3 and Ratchet release this month and I had to play a few more bills this month.

But this looks good and is only 13something€...

Bosses are random I think, I've had different first level bosses on each playthrough.

God dammit dude just buy it. Did Alexander the Great complain he conquered too many countries? NO! He kept buying more video games!

Just seeing bits of this on Twitter, and got curious. Looks like fun, but I'm a bit worried. The OP basically sold me on the game, but

1) I like dungeon / loot games
2) I like shooters
3) I really don't enjoy roguelikes and having bough several by mistake don't want to so so again

Seeing mentions that this is a roguelike - to what extent?

Im in the same boat. I need a sense of progression.

Game seems great but I have one very annoying issue.

Every time you kill an enemy the game freezes for a millisecond. It's irritating.

Yeah, that's what holds me back from enjoying roguelikes. I get reset a few times and that's about as far as I go with them. The feeling of futility kicks in early for me without a strong measure of progress.

From what I've gathered from dev comments, footage, and impressions, there are three aspects to the progression:
1) Meta-progression spread across playthroughs. Things you do in early playthroughs can have effects on later playthroughs (i.e. something you do results in a boss appearing later)
2) The Isaac-style progression of new weapons and items being added to the pool of loot that you can find in the dungeons
3) The Necrodancer-esque progression where your hub world grows more lively and gains more NPCs, opening up new shops and other elements as you play

I've only played about an hour but the variety of guns and other pickups seem neat (anvil launcher was my first pickup). The pace of the action seems a tad slow as does the progression. The floors are large and you need to explore them for weapons, upgrades, currency, etc. I can see the first few floors getting tedious while you are trying to progress to lower floors. On the plus side, the bosses are random.

3) The Necrodancer-esque progression where your hub world grows more lively and gains more NPCs, opening up new shops and other elements as you play

That's pretty accurate though unlocking the shop keepers feels very much like finding the character skins in Spelunky. Bosses drop universal currency you can spend with those shopkeepers and then those items will appear in future runs.

Today is gunna go so slow, I cannot wait for tonight! =D

I loved the hell out of this at EGX last September and even won a little LP with some soundtrack on it.

I already know it plays soooooo good so I'm aching to play it.

The trailer theme is absolute boss too!

Freeze frames most likely and configurable like in NT too hopefully.

I don't think it's configurable. Even more odd is that sometimes an enemy won't trigger it. Also I have screen shake set to off. Turning it up a bit does minimize the hitch.

Game is sick though.

This is pretty much spot on.

I'd have preferred a bit more of a meaningfull progression curve, like persistent upgrades and improvements, I'm not sure I like the way unlocked weapons only go in your loot pool, which means you have to get them from chests, which means you need keys, it's a bit of a protracted gameplay loop, but for me, it's much more fun than BoI.

The bosses are randomized, or at least sort of.
And that is definitely a funny take on the Beholder from D&D, trust me. :D

Yoooo this game is good. Great feel for the shooting, art is great, loving every minute. Also the fact that you can quick start before the title even appears is amazing.

It's still a roguelike.
You unlock items, power ups and stuff you can find around in the gungeons as loot, the central hub gets populated with characters you can interact with (some are sellers, some give you tasks, others are just downright mysterious), but eventually when you start your run you're always back to square one, with the standard set of weapons (depending on the character you choose) and nothing else.
So yeah, it's ultimately a roguelike, and if you hate those mechanics, it's hard this game will change your mind about all that.

So I played a few runs tonight. This is really fun, much more so than binding of isaac since this is more of a bullet hell game. Ran into a couple of set pieces, and had no clue what to do:
A giant lock with a face with for a jail cell with a giant and girl inside (regular keys didn't seem to work. Also ran into an alter and a statue, where my only option was to leave.
What do I need for these?

You need a special key, you should be able to find it in the same level, these characters unlock the exchange store back at the hub

Not gonna lie this gif pretty much sold me on this game.... that and the really positive impressions from the last couple of pages :)
I needed something to play while waiting for Dark Souls anyway!

Took down 3 bosses on my first go.

I already love this game.
Shame I was testing it out on my kids account.

king bullet from the trailers was easy I had the uzi that shot out the word bullets and could keep constant stream of death hitting him. whilst just worrying about the bullet hell.

the Gatling gull and that eye thing were easier.

Didn't really get too far anyway. shame you lose everything when you die

I rescued that girl in the cell and bought some weapons form her but couldn't work out where to actually collect them.

So, like, GMG purposely waiting the very last minute to send the codes or what ? Gosh this is annoying.

KBM sounds like a no brainer unless it has some weird issues

it's impossible to go back to controller Nuclear Throne after you go mouse/kb

I read somewhere on the steam forums that controller has significant aim assist and it's not like Nuclear Throne/Hotline Miami where you control the cursor at a max length away from your character.

M&kb should be fine though and still the most accurate to control, most footage has people playing with it.

Spoiler question I guess:

I found the dude who makes a shortcut for you and he's hanging out in the breach. He says he'll meet me at the elevator on the second floor but when I get there he is nowhere to be found? What am I missing?
