What killed them is that they doubled down on Gamepass, and then GAAS killed Gamepass.
At this point the only thing to do is hope Sony is dumb enough to continue putting their games on PC.

Marketing wise it is. But the ROG is just a PC handheld. Their other devices will be powered by the new AMD chip and that will differentiate them.

Only a matter of time before other retailers pull it off the shelves here in the US. It's already completely dead outside of the US.
So many years of mismanagement from Microsoft and GamePass led to this. With the way the Xbox Series consoles died I wonder why some people believe the OEM Console/PC hybrids MS has planned for next gen will be successful. Very few of the current Xbox customers from this gen will be showing up next gen after this disastrous finish from MS. They'll be lucky to do even 32 million lifetime by the end of this gen. That's not how you build a brand and customer loyalty.

Probably lower, similar to the Wii U (13–15M). In practice, even lower:
A console without strong third-party support, no exclusives, and very expensive… and it's not like the future releases from Xbox Game Studios are plentiful or high-quality either.
The interesting thing will be what happens with Xbox when Phil Spencer finally leaves.

That's what I'm saying. Series consoles sold 20-30 million and their new hardware will capture a fraction of that audience.
5-10 million would be my guess, especially if there is little to no retail presence. And I agree that third party support will begin to dry up.
Series consoles is the best Xbox will be going forward. They aren't coming back after they fizzle out and die.

Right now there are about 50 million Xbox users across both the current and past generation, How can Microsoft abandon us so easily after we've invested huge amounts of money in games? I own a Series X and I'm starting to feel that Microsoft is betraying me as a loyal customer, It feels like they are deliberately killing the Xbox brand, If this really happens they can be sure that I will never buy any Microsoft published game ever again.

Microsoft absolutely cares (or at least, cared) about hardware, Phil Spencer's leaked emails to Nadella and Hood (and how much money they spent this gen on HW subsidies) prove this without a shadow of a doubt. He talked about having a plan to win the gen in an email that specifically mentioned his closest console competitor and its price tag. When Redfall flopped critically he came out and specifically cited the Xbox One v PS4 gen as the worst generation to lose.
All actual indications were that they really cared about HW and it was the core of their strategy.
The part they used to not care about a lot is profits and margins, but I sense that this has changed after ABK closed. They found themselves with a lot of software but with no big console installbase or big PC store of their own to sell it on, not to mention losing exorbitant amounts of money on HW and maybe even GP too.
With all the above in mind, the reasons for their pivot to being a mega multi-platform publisher has become quite clear.
Did it come preloaded with lots of superfluous shit you needed to uninstall/disable?

I would argue that "infinite money" is actually a detriment to a company like MS trying to enter new markets
They just spend a lot of money on trying to buy their way in, deliver underwhelming products which compete poorly with existing market leaders, throw up their hands in frustration, and walk away after having wasted billions
This has happened time and time again: Zune, Windows Mobile/Phone, Internet Explorer/Edge, Mixer, Xbox, etc.

They cared about hardware sales at the start of the generation but that slowly changed when they realized there's no way for them to compete. They've been pulling out of markets overseas, and now they're pulling out at US retailers. The writing is on the wall and they aren't fighting it.
They will make new hardware to retain their Game Pass audience for as long as they can but when that dries up they will bow out.
Hasn't Sony been getting quite woke as well? Or have they renegged on it?

I spent a lot of money on both my PSN and Xbox accounts over the years, we don't have game streaming options (backup in case hardware stops being supplied) from either company in South Africa, if any of them "goes" by stopping hardware sales it would suck royally for me and anyone else like me down here. Total writeoff of either game collections.
Think it might be a safer idea long term to just move over to PC (Steam) and stay there, for me personally, at least Steam isn't bound to hardware or spotty global streaming coverage. (I don't like the idea of game streaming anyway.)
If any of the big three "goes" / steps out of hardware, it'll highlight risks involved in personally going balls out in a single proprietary platform and probably end up fucking over all of them.

There was a rumor going around that production was halted late last year
But looking at how they have largely disappeared in Europe and are now vanishing in US/UK which were the 2 largest markets for Xbox, this seems like a more plausible rumor every day

The Xbox is dead. Next gen the price for the console will be so high no one who could afford it would not have a better option. This is in no way related to the playstation which is selling well and looks healthy. Switch 2 is doing well and this boxing day will tell that tale.
They no longer want to sell this hardware. They keep jacking the price and not worrying too much about keeping it in stock. That is a signal to you and to us all that this is not a serious console.
Next gen they will put out their hybrid mostly for clout. They like to ride the line between going full 3rd party but also having the credibility and dependability that only a 1st party can provide. The real reason is that everyone knows gamepass only sells to big xbox fans. Even on PC. Most of us won't go for game rentals that we don't even choose unless we have a lot of loyalty and love for the people selling it. Without 1st party hardware gamepass is deader than Xbox so they need to keep the first party in name only until they can successfully separate the brand identity from the services value and hopefully make it popular with pc gamers in its higher cost form. All of these are extremely desperate moves and we have 1 more generation before perhaps most of these crazy pipe dreams fall to obscurity. Xbox has went off the rails and there is no coming back.
