Washington Post: Democrats see danger signs in states where Clinton has not fully engaged

In Michigan, Pennsylvania and, to a lesser extent, Wisconsin, an affinity for Trump’s message of economic populism and nationalism has surprised many Democrats. These are big, industrial states they have carried for the past three decades — and where Clinton, so far, has not fully focused.

...

“Trump kind of scares you, like he might do something goofy, something bad,” said Scott Vezinau, 51, the owner of Wave’s.

“Like push the red button when he doesn’t know what he’s doing,” his wife, Denys, 49, a waitress here, chimed in.

“But I’m for change,” Scott said. “We’re looking for something different.”

Denys explained: “We’ve been born and raised Democrat. My father worked at Chrysler, his father for General Motors. We voted for Obama. But we’re leaning towards Trump. Where else do you go?”

...

Clinton aides express a steely confidence about all three states. They think the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia next month will generate positive attention across Pennsylvania. In Michigan, they are doubtful that Trump could outperform Mitt Romney, who was born here and whose father was a popular governor; Romney lost to Obama by nearly 10 percentage points in 2012. And in Wisconsin, Clinton allies are heartened by the reservations many prominent conservatives there have voiced about Trump.

On the ground, Clinton’s campaign has been working with the Democratic Party to deploy scores of staffers — though they are getting a later start than in higher-priority states such as Ohio.

...

The biggest unions are endorsing Clinton, but some Democratic officials said they are nervous that private polling of the memberships of some Michigan unions shows up to one-half preferring Trump.

A closed-door strategy meeting this spring of Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta, campaign manager Robby Mook and Michigan’s Democratic congressional delegation grew somewhat tense when lawmakers challenged the aides on their commitment to the state, according to three people with knowledge of the session.

The aides acknowledged that Clinton got out-hustled in the primary and said they would be focused on trade as a hot issue, though offered no specific plan to woo working-class white men from Trump, according to the sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the meeting was private. Still, the lawmakers and campaign aides left in general agreement about Clinton’s strategy for the fall.

Some people really shouldn't be able to vote. "Trump might do something crazy like launch nukes on a whim! But then, he is different, so what the hell, let's go with him."

He's "not the establishment". He "tells it like it is." He "will keep the illegals out."

States always bitch that the candidate doesn't treat them like the beautiful special flower that they feel they are.

But my lord the media wants their horse race, so we should just get out of the way and let them have it. Mess.

Pretty much, but we want the horse race this year. We need it to look close so voters turn out and Trump doesn't sneak through with low turnout. I'd rather have everyone going "lol horse race my ass" than "I didnt vote because Clinton had this all wrapped up and I didn't think I needed too!"

It's Clinton. The media and states disproportionally shit to her because of who she is.

Oh I agree or biggest issue is complacency. We gotta fight for every vote. If she could manage a 10 point margin , I think we take the House.

I badly badly want to believe that Wisconsin is a lock. But man, if we could elect Walker we could do anything...

My corner of the state better pull through and then some. I actually might be back home during the election, I should look into volunteering. Every vote in the southeast is going to matter

Isn't George Will a giant asshole? Why does it matter if he "leaves" the GOP?

Like I said in the other thread, it's not that its a sign his heart grew three sizes, it's that it's a signal to all the other giant asshole old-school conservatives that they're gonna have to hold their noses and vote for Hillary this one time.

omg someone from my high school percussion ensemble just made a huge FB post about fluoride in our water supply as a means of mind control.

this is a first for me

No. Young people are exactly as economically conservative as everyone else.

Reading today about the Chinese Communist Party murdering members of a Taoist religion and then stealing their organs and wow, this is horrifying.

And going on today.

At a party and saw a friend I haven't seen in forever. And I was like "ah dude what's up!" But as I ran towards him I saw he was wearing a trump hat

Weird mix of emotions rushed through me in the span of about 5 seconds

Every heard of Body Works? It's said that knock offs of that actually used chinese criminals as the bodies instead of people who consent to have their bodies donated.

I don't understand why Wisconsin is even talked about here after it was Trump's worst performance of the primaries. I can see the argument for Pennsylvania (though it won't matter as long as Trump is underwater nationally), the rest not really.

Wisconsin is often assumed to be favorable ground for Trump because it's Midwestern and white. You can kind of see the conventional wisdom in how people overreacted to Trump's primary loss. The polls said he was going to lose but people treated it as a shocking result that surely indicated that Trump was losing steam nationally. It really isn't favorable terrain for him.

Whatever happened to the dump Trump movement with the delegates? Seems like Brexit took over the news cycle in the last 72 hours so everything is overshadowed and will probably rule most of next week too. We are three weeks away from convention so hopefully Trump holds on. The closer we get to the date, the harder it is to steal the nomination away from him.

There's also how all of this talk about how Trump is going to bring in new voters in the rust belt always overlooks how there are demographics he is underperforming Romney with, namely women and suburban voters. I'm already tired of hearing about Trump's threat to Pennsylvania even from people like Nate Cohn.

How am I supposed to read that chart?

There's a 0.0 at the bottom of the chart. If the bar is to the right of that 0.0, then Millennials are more conservative than the average American voter in that category. If the bar is to the left, Millennials are more liberal. The further left the bar ends, the more liberal Millennials are on the issue.

The green bar shows Millennial opinion not adjusted for demographic differences whereas the blue bar shows Millennial opinion adjusted for demographic differences. For example, Hispanics make up more of the Millennial population than Hispanics make up of the entire U.S. population and Hispanics care more about climate change than other demographics so you would expect a left-ward shift just from demographics alone. The blue bar tries to judge the actual change in opinion instead of just change in demographics, but the green bar is what is relevant in terms of future votes.
