Digital Foundry: Silent Hill 2 Remake PC "Visuals Scale Beyond PS5 - But #StutterStruggle Cannot Be Avoided"

It depends on what you value, and how you find enjoyment from the platform. $3250 is worth it for me, maybe it’s not for you.
If "wobbly reflections" and clearer rubbish is justifications for me spending an extra $3k then cool. I just can't justify spending that extra money to play the exact same game with slightly better graphics that the vast majority of people wouldn't even see or care about.

And yes, this is me sort of regretting spending that almost $4k on a gaming PC that pretty much does what my PS5/Series X does but just with prettier graphics.

If your takeaway from PC gaming is only slightly better graphics then it’s likely not for you. I can probably list a dozen reasons why I prefer it as a platform personally.

That’s totally fair. Like I think it’s worth mentioning how mods on PC are addressing many issues and doing cool things besides that. I guess my contention is that PC is the perfect budget platform and not generally recommendable as a sole gaming platform unless you have money to burn on somewhat negligible neat extras.

The reason I say that is because the near totality of PC exclusives and what makes PC cool as a platform are made to run on potatoes, and with that in mind I can get 85-90% of the same perks of PC gaming with a mobo that tops out at a GTX1060TI. Even half the cost of a big boy PC build more than covers a Switch and PS5 to get first party console exclusives and a much more consistent hassle free experience because devs are typically targeting those platforms first.

PC ports just seem to be getting worse and worse. If I was into conspiracies I’d legitimately start claiming that developers are colluding with PC hardware manufacturers to force upgrades.

But to your point everyone views things differently. No hate.

And i'm sure right now the devs are working their asses off to deliver a stutter free PS5 Pro version, which will be the premium way to experience the game.

And what makes you think devs are not colluding with console manufacturers to force upgrades? PS5 Pro for example. Here is a hint, though. From "this generation hasn't started yet, we only get cross-platform games" we immediately went to "Ah, this can barely hit 30fps on consoles at lower than 1080p with worse graphics".

So, it's not like the PC requirements have gone up. In actuality, when a game performs badly on a high-end PC, it performs even worse on a PS5/Xbox Series X. That's a fact.

It does, but shader compilation stutter is a plague the PC cannot always overcome

Traversal/camera stutter affects all gamers

I'm playing the game across multiple PC systems and can tell you for a fact that while they exist, they are in no way game-breaking. These are traversal stutters and they happen rarely when moving around the game world, not at key moments of interaction (e.g. combat). But this is the typical effect that a negative-bias video will have on people who have no experience with the game.
I can attest to this. Played my copy on an external HDD. Stutter traversal was very rare.

Console version on the other hand I haven’t experienced yet. If it does exist, it’s even rarer or I didn’t notice.

In any case, it is rare and not intrusive on any system I played on console or PC.

I spent over $3500 plus $300 on a keyboard and mouse making it come to $3800 in total PLUS Windows 11 which cost $150 for a grand total of $3950 on my gaming PC. I spent $700 on my PS5. Please tell me how I can make up that $3250 difference on my PC over my PS5?
The fact that you spent $450 on a mouse+keyboard+Windows tells us right there you’re not the most savvy or responsible spender.

And yes, this is me sort of regretting spending that almost $4k on a gaming PC that pretty much does what my PS5/Series X does but just with prettier graphics.
I swear, I never know if people like you are just trolls who don’t actually own a gaming PC or if they have legitimate grievances (probably the former judging by how you rave about the Pro). Before dropping fucking 4 grands on something, did you do your research? Why would you spend that kind of money on something if you aren’t certain it’ll be worth it?

Edit: Probably a troll.

So way back before the 4090 even came out, you acknowledged that it was a lot of money for "extra frames", yet you went ahead and dropped $4K on a gaming PC, including a whopping $150 on Windows? But it doesn’t stop there. You go on and on about the Pro at $700. If the difference between the regular-ass PS5 and 4090 to you is imperceptible, then I have no idea why you’d get a Pro. In your eyes, it’d be the exact same thing…unless of course you’re dishonest, a troll, or both, but you aren’t, right?

The reflections are a fucking blob. Are you joking? We can’t even make out what the hell it’s supposed to be.
for real bruv?

He's supposed to be a jounalist, it's his fucking job to try and make stuff like that happen. If he can make the effort to get access to Crytek to toss them off then he can also do exactly the same thing at the other end of the spectrum when things aren't working so well. I know people give the likes of Jason Schreier a lot of shit (and rightly so in many instances), but at least he actually understands the assignment of being part of the gaming media/journalism circle. He's uncovered and got interviews/access covering far worse stuff than a stuttering engine issue.

Bottom line, Alex is not appropriately leveraging his position.

Digital Foundry has and continues to be awful for the culture of gaming because of how much they focus on negativity. They pre-condition people and fuel awful attitudes.

Not a troll at all. People can have changing opinions. Or are we not allowed to see things differently as time goes on? Troll my ass. I stand by everything I say, and I still stand by the fact that a gaming PC costs too much. 7-8 months ago my frame of mind was to get a gaming PC and sell all my consoles. I have now had a change of heart.

As for spending $450 on Windows/keyboard/mouse, and judging me on that... Cool. But mechanical keyboards aren't cheap. Neither are good quality mouses. But hey, keep digging further into my post history to see what you can come up with. My apologies for having different opinions months/years later.

It's one thing to have "different" opinions, it's another to be plain disingenuous.

Disingenuous about what exactly? Anyone can buy what they want, but this thread is about saying a PC worth thousands more than a PS5 has better shadows and clearer images of rubbish! I said it's not worth all that extra money for those tiny things! You think it's worth it? Cool! You do you. I think that if someone had to buy Silent Hill 2 remake on PC or PS5 and had neither a PS5 or gaming PC, I'd recommend spend less money and buy a PS5 to get the same experience with slightly worse visuals.

If the 4090 compared to the PS5 has differences that are near imperceptible to the eyes and only slightly better visuals, then the Pro by the same token looks identical. Don't be a damn hypocrite. There's a huge difference between, "I don't think the premium is worth it," and just lying pretending there is almost no difference and then shilling for a Pro which has an even smaller difference.

You're so transparent it's comical.

Yep whatever. I said what I said. If you think spending ALL that extra money on a 4090 is in any way comparable to a PS5 then cool. I'm happy for someone who is ready to buy either 1 of them to save their money on a PS5 over a 4090.

You really overpaid for that Windows license and keyboard & mouse. $200 gets you a Keychron keyboard, Lamzu mouse, and Windows retail key. Better than the majority of stuff you get from Razer for example.

Purchased everything for my gaming PC through Scorptec here in Australia. Really researched every single item I purchased. Then they built it for me. Windows 11 was part of that deal. For a 14700k and a 4070ti super I thought it was a pretty good deal. Regardless, and I'll repeat this 1 more time for people who CHOOSE to not understand, IF YOU HAVE TO BUY A PS5 OR A GAMING PC WORTH THOUSANDS FOR CLEARER VISUALS THEN GO A PS5/PRO! But really, do what you want. This is ONLY my opinion.

>Spends $4000 on a gaming machine he claimed was barely different from a $400 console
>Spends $150 on a Windows license
>Will see the difference on a $700 PS5

Couldn't agree more with you post.

Yes people- don't be a fool like me and waste your hard earned on a gaming PC. You just wanna play games? Get a PS5/Pro. You'll get the exact same experience with worse visuals over a high end PC that most won't know about unless digital foundry points them out AND you get to save yourself about 2-3k!

Or you can be a dick like Giaff and think that anyone who disagrees with this is a troll for having a differing opinion.

Did you spend $3650 on a PC that has a 4070ti Super and 14700k? I hope that is not USD as you got utterly ripped off if so. I assume it was Australian dollars?

This honestly just seems like someone is seriously butt hurt getting mad because someone who lives in an economically disadvantaged area (Seriously Austrialia is expensive AF due to import costs) realizes they spent way too much money on PC components they didn’t really need or find an appreciable difference in relative to cost and are now telling people to not fall into the same wasteful mindset.

like what’s even happening here?

Personally I get it if the fucking delta is 4K versus 700 dollars. Heck one of my best friends spent nearly 3K building a new top of the line AMD PC with a 7900XTX (they were a moron/got lied and went for a 9950X over a 7800X3D) and told me later they got suckered into the fever of wanting the best. Told me it wasn’t really worth it and that they’re just playing the same MMOs and doing Zelda randomized speed runs they were doing before.

The ‘rat race’ is fucking cancerous and that can even apply to the PS5 Pro guys. Get over it and let people live in peace. Heck the only reason I’m getting a pro is I’m selling my OG directly for more than I could get on trade in.

Good thing PC gaming is not only clearer visuals. 🤷‍♂️
Exactly, you get like almost all the perks of PC gaming as a platform and almost all its exclusives without going into the high or even mid range.

Almost all of its exclusives are designed to run on ancient potatoes. In terms of features you also get nearly all the mod/emulation/indie/freeware fun and utility. It’s a fantastic budget platform and you save money to get all the dedicated consoles and their first party offerings.

Once you get into mid range and above, to a very real degree you are spending that money for ‘clearer visuals’.

I'm only here to explain my experience. Yes, at that stage I wanted a gaming PC and was stupid spending all that money for minimal gains.

If people want that, spend it! Doesn't faze me but I'm just telling you what I did was a mistake and for people who want minimal gains, don't waste your money.

Majority of stutters are gone, it was much faster fix than I expected.

Frame gen is shit, lots of visual artifacts...

Stutters are gone, but even before this update, of late, I've been getting that UE crash note after I close the game. A tad frustrating!

Same here.

I think what is left are actual (rare) traversal stutters while they removed stutters from something completely else:

  • Fixed stuttering issues related to sky map generation.
