[MLiD] PS6 Early Specs Leak: AMD RDNA 5, Lower Price than PS5 Pro!

How does only 3x upgrade makes sense for a generational leap? This would make ps6 on par with the absolute lowest end gpu's at the time rtx7060 in 2028. If you think ps5 launch was already bad, around twice slower than 30 series, this would look even more pathetic.
The Document for 2023 and obviously will change, 5 years gap is way too early to talk about specs.

That's not the real issue.
TLOU2 on PS4 is an example of not to be worried about the specs. Especially with improvements to A.I.

The real issue is handheld imo.
I'm all for supporting it with cross gen titles, but when it comes supporting it with 10th gen only games is the real issue.

Those handheld specs start to limit the generation leap.
It's a little brother of an old brother who never existed. Like the series s but a lot nicer than that.

Based on this PS6 raster target could be around 5070 which is similar to PS5 targeting 2070 in 2020. That's about 20% lower raster performance than 9700 XT. Magnus could be around 5080 raster performance.

The big unknown is RT/PT performance (that was also unknown for PS5 as many were thinking it wouldn't even have hardware RT).

Not entirely true as they are already talking approx what specs (hardware wise especially) they can achieve for a set price many years in advance.

I know once Xbox was done with their current hardware before it even launched the team was already starting on the next generation

The 5060 is about 40% faster than the 3060, which launched 4 years before. So at that same rate of improvement, in 2029 we would expect the 60 series card to be as fast as the 3080.

ML is a big unknown. Huge research is going on to figure out how to deploy ML in various elements of rendering.

They're talking a lot about the GPU, but what about the CPU? Is it a good improvement compared to the base PS5 CPU?Maybe it's 3x more powerful because of the CPU?

Amd always does this, the problem is they're always playing catch up. Even with FSR they are behind DLSS: still no Ray reconstruction, still no ai frame gen, still no multi frame gen. Think about it this way AMDs brand new 2025 350mm² chip (9070xt) can't even beat Nvidias 370mm² 2022 chip (4080) in raster let alone at RT and it's even worse at PT.

Its never a question of will AMD progress enough to where Nvidia *used to be*, it's whether AMD will catch up where Nvidia is today. I'm sure RDNA5 will finally beat the 4090, but guess what the 4090 came out in 2022 not 2027. By then the 6090 will be out and guess what AMD is going to be behind again, they have been outpaced since Maxwell came out in 2014, it's been 11 years of this shit. Hopefully next gen is different but at this point the boy has cried wolf 1000 times so who's to believe him.
My point is the amount of progress AMD made with RDNA4 and FSR4, even with CDNA4. AMD has a very good chance of matching Nvidia next gen.

They're talking a lot about the GPU, but what about the CPU? Is it a good improvement compared to the base PS5 CPU?Maybe it's 3x more powerful because of the CPU?

CPU will be good, even if they use low clocks or something (seems like they want low power draw) it should easily be 2x PS5 CPU.

PS3 BC is 100% possible with this CPU, even 2x framerate in most games. Too bad Sony seems uninterested...

I don't think they will go this route because it's not a Series S situation. MS spent a great deal of time and marketing to try and stress that "it will be the exact same experience just at a lower res". With a handheld I doubt they take this route just as steamdeck didn't. People understand that the handheld experience isn't the same and there will be little effort to convince the users it is.

So there will likely be no mandate and if there is (to try and get game support) it can exist for the crossgen period then be dropped when both the game library for the handheld is fleshed out and the next gen only games that might struggle on it begin to appear. MS made the mistake of not listening to devs who wanted the parity mandate dropped but at the same time they had promised their users the same experience and failed to deliver even that, not having continued game support would have been a lawsuit for sure. As long as PS doesn't try to market the handheld as "exactly the same as PS6 just portable" or something like that they will be fine.
With the Xbox SS, we don't know if it was Phil and Jason Macdonalds' stupidity or a blatant lie.
Sony doesn't have this problem; they're not as stupid as Phil and Jason, so they just have to choose to tell the truth and not lie.

There is even the possibility that support for the portable version is not mandatory.

If we consider the PS5 github leak and if we can use the previous leak as a basis for this one, the PS6, that specification is half the power of the PS6.
PS5 GitHub leak was extremely close to the final product. Clocks were less than 10% different.

The replies under this tweet are interesting.

Basically, it's games that are stopping people from upgrading to the PS5 not cost. Which is actually true when we look at the amount of exclusives PS5 has so far.

A game like GTA6 can see a huge amount of migration if it's next gen only.

Sony are absolute arseholes when it comes to legacy BC.
They have an emulator for ps1 and PS2, but lock it away for their crappy classics.
Why want they let us just stick our discs in and play our games.
They can do PS3 emulation on ps5 too I think, I used to ran rpcs3 on a pc a lot weaker then ps5 and it ran okay.
Sony have access to all the resources they need to get it working, they just want to keep selling us games we already own.
Problem is people will buy remasters and remakes, me included

The Github leak indicated RDNA1 with 8TF of power.
That's roughly half the power of the PS5, considering the outdated architecture.

Because of this, Sony had to confirm TWICE that it had RT support, and Alex Bugaga even insisted for a long time, obviously because he was frustrated with the success of the PlayStation 4, which would be "RT by software".

It wouldn't obviously be hardware-based, and that's why it's not included on these hardware sheets.

Its exactly like 80% of power of PS5 (10TF in final machine), not half. I don't get how your math works.

PS5 is RDNA1, RT from RDNA2 was added to it (leak was probably before that happened). Just like PS5 Pro is RDNA 2 in raster with RDNA4 RT units.

The GitHub leak was 36 CU at 2 GHz with 8 core Zen 2 and 448 GB/s memory. The final product was 36 CU at 2.17 GHz with 8 core Zen 2 and 448 GB/s memory. RDNA1 or RDNA2 outside of RT is largely irrelevant to actual performance.

So the leak was very close to the final specification. But I doubt this leak is as accurate as that was considering the source and time to release.

Did he actually say that?

Has it been confirmed the handheld will play ps6 games? Last I checked, there were rumors of it playing only ps5 and ps4.

The good thing from this leak is people will have low expectation from PS6 so the overall real world performance might surprise few people.

This gen SX has 44% more CU than PS5 and full RDNA2, where was PS5 was RDNA 1.2 or something but the end result, both console are still pretty much on par with each other. Having said that 40CU vs 68CU is a big difference. PS6 tiny chip will need some secret sauce to make up for 58% less CU.

I only really here PS5 games, but I think it's better to look at it as playing PS4 games only because the list of PS5 games are small.

Maybe one or two PS5 games gets optimized but I feel it'll mostly be a PS4 handheld.

The same reason why Nintendo locks its classics behind an online subscription. And Sony behind PS+ higher tier subs. They don't get money from supporting legacy media and platforms.

Fyi even the PSP had perfect PS1 emulation.

I find it interesting we're getting any PS56 leaks so early if we assume a Nov '27 release. Gonzalo was I think the earliest leak for PS5 in ~Jan '19 so what we got recently for PS6 is 4-6 months earlier than even that.

Maybe not a coincidence it was shortly after Microsoft did that colab video with AMD!

Honestly at this point I'm thinking both Sony and MS will align pretty closely in both specs and release timing ultimately.

Why does everyone immediately start trying to identify a matching PC GPU part every time they hear console specs? Haven't we leaned that whatever the PS6 GPU ends up being it will be a "custom" part optimized in ways that are simply not possible on PC. If there were a PC equivalent part, it definitely doesn't exist now so mapping it to a 5070 or whatever is just fruitless.

Let's put some context on these figures. Without getting caught up in specific numbers which it is way too early to do, there are some safe bets in overall targets (that I do have some data to support). For one, Sony in particular is targeting PS6 to lean heavily on ML acceleration and path traced rendering. At this point, Raster performance is not very compelling and cannot scale as far as it once could. 3-4x is a reasonable expectation from the base. But more importantly, the RT perf should be in the 6-8x range at least (10x maybe possible…we'll see) and the ML perf will be several times that of the PS5 Pro.

For raster, the real world goal will be to take a game running at 4K/30 or 40 on the base and 4K/60 on the Pro to now scale up to 4K/120+ on the PS6 (HDMI 2.2 is targeted so 4K/240 support is on the table). That's raw perf and not with ML acceleration. For RT/PT, the target is to run the latest path traced games at 4K/60. For example, Cyberpunk Overdrive, Indiana Jones, and Doom Dark Ages etc.

Before you start saying that the rumored specs aren't powerful enough to hit path traced targets, that's where the ML technologies come into play. Expect updated Super Res, Frame Gen, and Ray Reconstruction technologies in the future versions of PSSR. These things together can yield a 2-4x perf multiplier with a high quality 4K or 8K output. So if we're at 3-4x raw perf over base PS5, then total perf could be in the 6-10x range with ML and RT advancements. Key point here: I wouldn't look too much into the raw raster uplift as that is not the key target area for advancement next gen.

Microsoft will be doing similar things but both companies will also try to find more unique aspects of their platforms to distinguish them. Those additional features are still on the hush so more on that as it gets closer to release.

PS Vita had specs first leaked in July 2009, and it launched in December 2011.

Emulators can get a lot crazier than that.

Can Sony regain our trust after concord and other failed games? Tbf, Sony is not that different from MS after Concord.

If Sony really goes with some weak pos handheld hybrid bullshit next gen, they've lost me as a customer.

PS6 info started getting circulated very early

For the handheld to be successful, it pretty much has to. If the handheld ends up being nowhere near as powerful as a PS5 then I don't see it working.
If the handheld nears ps5 level to play ps6 games too then what's the point of a ps6 if you can play those games on ps5 too?

The only reason I can think of is that ps6 will play those games at a higher frame rate and resolution like a PC version of a game. So a ps5 pro pro?

I think Tom's point here was more that he hadn't heard anything about a Pro which in hindsight, and Cerny's Pro video, was very surprising has it was into the 3rd year of development at the time of that Tweet!

PS Vita had specs first leaked in July 2009, and it launched in December 2011.
OK, that is interesting. I didn't know that but in the last 2-3 console generations where both Sony and Xbox have used the same AMD base specs the leaks have been pretty consistent in being ~18 months out from release for the first concrete leaks.

This time though (leaving aside hints from the likes of HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 and K KeplerL2 ) we get an official video dropped from Xbox about the renewed partnership with AMD for the next gen and then shortly after we get this more detailed MiLD leak 2.5 years from release at least for PS6.

Maybe both Sony and Xbox have finally decided that being secretive is a hiding to nothing. Cerny definitely directly addressed leaks in the Pro video......

Let's make this clear, it will run PS6 Portable games, and through backwards compatibility; PS4 games, and PS5 games that support the low power mode.

He leaked that Horizon Far West would look worse than Horizon Zero Dawn.

Guy was a dumbass.
You are leaving important context out. He stated "Horizon Zero Dawn on PC will look better than Horizon Forbidden West on PS5." It wasn't a leak, it was him referring to the ability for PC games to scale up further than what he believed the PS5 could offer.

PS6 Portable games?
You mean PS6 games at lower resolution, frame rate, graphics fidelity, etc.? Which is technically just PS5 games.

I don't think the Handheld would have exclusive games.

I mean as games directly developed for the PS6 Portable, so yes, that's bolded. And no, it doesn't mean that they are "technically just PS5 games".

The specs we have so for means the games should be playable on the PS5 as well.

I don't know what you really expect from a 4 core, 16 cu, 15W handheld.

Yeah, sorry, but that's just meaningless nowadays. Sony can and WILL make games that are available on PS6P (and PS6, ofc), but not on PS5.

That makes zero sense from a business standpoint. The PS5 user base is massive and you're telling me Sony isn't going to release games made for the handheld on the PS5 but would continue to port games to PC and leave out the PS5?

Agree on the principle but that's history revisionnism. Final clocks were up to 2.23ghz. 2.17ghz is an honest average given by cerny for the Pro.

Huh? I didn't know about that!

I wonder if the final system lived up to the tech details from this 2009 leak, given "specs downgrade" claims from right before E3 2011.

On another note, all this talk reminded me of the alleged MiniCell-based PSP successor:

Why didn't the Demon's Souls remake release on the PS4 when it would have no issue running it at all, AND for the massive user base? What about Destruction AllStars? The Last of Us Part I? Stellar Blade? Astro Bot?
Why did Lego Horizon Adventures and MLB The Show 25 skip the PS4, when they also had versions on weaker hardware like the Nintendo Switch?
Why did LocoRoco, Patapon or No Heroes Allowed skip more powerful hardware like the PS2, when other PSP games like Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters, Secret Agent Clank and Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier DID make the jump?
