Lightning Returns: FINAL FANTASY XIII (Steam) releases December 10th, supports 60 FPS

*Maximum supported frame rate: 60fps

Disappointing. This really isn't that much better than a 30fps limit. It's still an unnecessary arbitrary limit that shouldn't exist in the first place.

The limit would actually be ok for 99% of us if the game managed to mantain a stable framerate.

Yes 60 FPS limit would be a step up if it was actually capable of reaching and maintaining that limit.
But since it's the same engine as the last two games and that they never bothered fixing the issues before, I seriously doubt it'll be the case.

While it was harder for me to get a solid 60FPS at 4K on XIII-2, I was able to run XIII at 4k 60FPS with zero issues or PC settings tinkering.

I'm not really sure what the issues people had were, outside of the frame-pacing though.

May I ask what hardware are you using?

Some people have reported bad results even with high-end hardware.

i7-5820k, MSi GTX 970 4GB (on base FW, the one that didn't fix the fan issue, lol), 16GB DDR4 2133 RAM (8GBx2), SSD 840 EVO 250GB (FW EXT0DB6Q), Gigabyte GA-X99-UD4 1.0 (FW F12) . When I played I was on Win7x64, though I haven't played since switching to Win10x64.

I sometimes will overclock the RAM, video card, and CPU, but not often. Updated my chipset and SSD drivers too.

My time with XIII PC was a no-hassle, flawless experience (outside of what I mentioned earlier, though it didn't bother me much).
XIII-2 PC I had to make a lot of tweaks with power settings, some small OCs, and Nvidia Inspector tweaks as well. I went through an adjusted a lot of program settings, core affinities, services, etc. The experience with XIII-2 was a lot more inconsistent than my experience with XIII, however I was able to enjoy 60FPS a lot of the time. Usually it was much easier to get 60FPS at 1080p, so if I was in the mood for 60FPS over 4k, I would stick to 1080p and vice versa.

This could be fixed by installing the older drivers (the ones used for Windows 7 and 8). The drivers bundled with Windows 10 changed the way the triggers are mapped in DirectInput.
I'd get you a link, but they were removed from Major Nelson's blog

Thanks but I'll pass because it would disable the wireless driver/dongle. I'll just use the SteamPad if I ever return to this game.

I always had wierd frame pacing when trying 60fps it would constantly drop to 30fps in battles in the last 2 games

but if your ok with playing the at 30fps i just used these settings in nvidia control panel for a smooth experience in both 13 and 13-2 at 1080p.

also i have no controller issues using a standard 360 controller.

i3 4360 3.7GHz, 16GBs of ram, 750ti oc. windows 10 64bit.

GMG stopped taking preorders. Guess they jumped the gun before Square said so. Plus there's the pre-discount of 10% I'll wait for anyways

Weird for Square to announce the date and then refuse pre-orders (they've accepted them for XIII/XIII-2/Type-0). Maybe they're not sure to be able to deliver? Not delivering would be even weirder I guess. Still discussing the price perhaps?

By the way Toriyama is playing the game right now :P

At least they have a big group of QA for the port. Quality guaranteed.
/s... on both statements...

Yeah, as far as Durante's thread went, we figured it had everything to do with the UI overlay in combat. When it was disabled, it was 60fps throughout. (You also notice this in XIII-2 without any modding when paradigm changing because the UI disappears temporarily and it's super smooth then)

Truly.

Japan is lucky. They get to play as her in Dissidia in Nov and LR again in Dec.

Good port or not the game is undercooked, but as many have said the battle system and music is wonderful.

The quests are important not just for stat growth and rewards but they show show both serious and funny moments from both the NPCs and Light.

Enjoy Trolliyama's bizarre adventure

Pretty good summary, but lets hope its a technically competent port or people will whine big time.

interesting ye that makes sense wonder how that would get fixed. catching up on the durante thread now.

A bit weird there's no Aeris
Aerith
garb in this release. Was kinda looking forward to that. Still, day one.

Either turn off or make it smaller, what ever works best.

I'm not sure it will ever be possible to reduce its size (there is no such mod for XIII and XIII-2) but it will be possible to disable the HUD (maybe even at launch with GeDoSaTo).

Disabling the HUD will also very likely increase the framerate like in XIII and XIII-2.

I remember that problem. Yeah, something was wrong about how the game refresh or do the composition of the different UI layers. Mainly the hit numbers. Maybe tío many alpha layers? And I remember how disabling UI with GeDoSaTo fixed completely the problem.

Thinking about that, I guess if GeDoSaTo could take the UI layer as a whole before hidding it and then to draw it over the rendered imagen so the problem will be fixed.

Non-60 FPS trailer (with some weird motion blurring?) doesn't give me hope for the technical competence of the port.

I'm extremely eager to be proved wrong, though.

Frankly I believe the trailer was just made out of recycled material. I highly doubt that it was made from the PC version.

Screenshots also are recycled.

The stream page has the same screens as the Xbox site does. Seems like console version in trailer too.

Still looking forward to this. It stopped being on sale for some reason. I at least hope the performance is much smoother than the console one, which everyone claimed was crap and one of the reasons it wasnt great. Its still the only one i havent played.

Unbelievable that they can't even get PC screenshots nevermind a 60 FPS video to show potential buyers.
They really strike me as incompetent.

I wonder why they aren't allowing preorders yet... maybe they're waiting for black friday sales to end? Or maybe they're not sure they can deliver the game?

It's weird because the game is only ~ 10 days away.

For a late port it's a pretty good tactic to not have preorders in order to create a bigger splash on launch day. Releasing a late port between two Steam sales in a series where the PC ports have been a bit pants, and the overall response to the game is not super hot either, bigger/longer presence on the top seller chart should help.

They are going to need all the help they can get.

That makes sense actually. All people interested in the game would have probably bought it by now if it was available. Waiting for the sales to end will also have a negative effect though.

And yes, they really need all the help they can get considering that the port they put the most effort in (Type-0) is the one that sold the least.

if i remember they also did this with 13-2 for some reason you couldnt preorder it till like 7 days before release.
