Lightning Returns: FINAL FANTASY XIII (Steam) releases December 10th, supports 60 FPS

Just going to leave this here.

Thanks for sharing. I like to re-watch that video from time to time.

Here is another video of the game made by the same player.

Fun game, PC folks will like this.

I'm a little confused though, you would think Square would show off the 60fps gameplay by making the video 1080p60 on YouTube...

I don't see that option available.
I believe that the images used on the Steam Store page are recycled from the console marketing campaign, I don't think they were re-captured on PC.

In case you don't know you also shouldn't expect a stable 60fps framerate. 60fps is merely the maximum framerate that you can get, even users with high-end cards couldn't get a stable 60fps framerate in FINAL FANTASY XIII-2.

Absolutely not preordering, happy to pay the full price if the port is fine on day one, otherwise will just wait for a performance patch.

Just going to leave this here.

BTW do we know exactly what role played tri-Ace in the development of this gem of a battle system?

This is horrible. So what's the point on doing battles, now?
I'm not a fan of grinding, but what prevents me to skip all battles in LR if they don't reward me ?
Battles sort of give you XP sometimes, as certain drops are used for miniquest completion.
Battles also give EP, which allows you to do things like slow the global clock. And the usual loot.

There's still reason to fight them, it's just that it doesn't drive progression in a standard way.

Nothing in particular stops you from trying to avoid them.

Many of the items collected from battle can used in the "canvas of prayers" quests you get from Chocolina's board in all the towns. ie: collect 5 fur balls etc. Completing these can reward you with both stat increases or Gil iirc.

Chocolina is in too?
Oh my god, I thought SE dropped her. She was awful in XIII-2.

About time. I'll get it day one as with the others but between Trails of Cold Steel and this coming out right in the middle of finals, I don't think I'll get around to it until next year.

I still need to play through XIII-2's DLC, anyway. I think one of the episodes acts as a bridge towards this game or something?

For people wondering about what the rewards for fighting if there is no exp~

You get skills instead and the game has an Ability Synthesis system almost similar to Birth By Sleeps command melding.
You get a lot of skills down the line and you can fuse them to go from level 1 - 5 and hit the Star level if I remember correctly. That increases the damage ratios of the skill.
Also melding abilities will give passive stats and they too go a long way adding Defense, Attack, + Elemental Damage, and so on.

Awesome.
Will be nice to play this under better performing conditions.
Might try to add this alongside XIII-2 in my speedrun repertoire.

Strongly disagree here. I really liked the quest/leveling system. Really the only poor part about the game was the main story. And yeah you can tell the budget wasn't up to the previous titles but it hardly gets in the way.

Plus, there is no issue AT ALL with the time system. There is plenty of time to do stuff, even when barely stopping time. People get so tied up with restrictions, it's a mental barrier.

And quest-wise, well there's a bunch in the game. And when you throw so much in, you'll naturally get some that are good and some that are bad. It is what it is.

At the end of the day, the battle system is where it's at.

Yeah, of course it "supports" 60 FPS. Both of the other XIII games "supported" that, too. They both also ran like complete dogshit on all but the most specific of hardware builds, and had things like fucking button prompts that would make the framerate tank. Upgrading your hardware can make the games run worse than they did before. Hopefully, Square Enix has spent some time making sure this game functions properly.

I guess not enough sales plus lots of users complaining about the ports' quality.

Bummer :-(

Because I think that SE may have been using those games as a metric to see if they should do FFXV on PC or not. If they didn't like the sales, its probably not gonna happen now. Or if so much much much later.

Yeah same here. I was really impressed the first time I saw that video shortly before LR came out here. It scratches that same itch that makes me want to get better and better at games like DMC or Bayonetta even though it is a completely different beast. It's also the only reason I'll buy the PC version (if it's decent mind you) because I just couldn't handle how bad the framerate in the PS3 version gets at times.

I don't get it? It just looks like footage from the game.

It's footage of the game being played with exceptional skill. You're not going to pull any of that off in your first playthrough if at all.

Well, Steamspy does say over 400k for XIII (and half of that for XIII-2), so the quality of the ports definitely had some impact.

But I doubt SE is using this to judge PC interest. They have a bunch of FFs on PC already...

They probably did.

If they decided to port Type-0 HD after porting XIII and XIII-2 I don't see why they shouldn't port FFXV.

In my personal opinion FFXV will get a PC port too one day, it's just a matter of when.

I actually expect FFXV to be the first great PC port from Square Enix.

I know they have quite a few but they have all sold poorly really outside of the original FFXIII port. I'm not sure if they are impressed with Steam tbh. Hope I'm wrong though of course.

The time limit was awful. The game makes you feel like you're super limited, so you rush and you panic getting everything done in a neat fashion. Then you finish it all and have to sleep through like 5 days because you rushed when you didn't need to. Poor pacing. The time limit added nothing to the game anyway so I'm not even sure why they bothered. I would have enjoyed the game more without it. On the other hand I did like that it had time and everyone had schedules and stuff, I just wish it was like Xenoblade in that you could change the time quickly and easily.

In my personal opinion, SE is losing on not getting it on day one. I mean, for FFXV.

Awesome, hopefully this time around there's going to be a way to exit the game without having to press "escape" on a keyboard. A nice little "exit game" option in-game that works with both kb+mouse as well as gamepads would be great. You know, bare minimum features are always welcome.

Nice, I really wish they'd fix the other games though. Its impossible to get 60fps even with my rig. Also last time I checked the XB1 controller on Windows 10 doesn't play nice with XIII-2 even after I updated it. But why bother with patches and support, right?

I believe it was Kitase who said that getting new players isn't something they did well in the past few years so they will try their best with PC. I may be mistaken (I'm sure someone at Square said something similar though).

By the way Forbes a few days ago wrote:
Unlike other PC versions, this appears to be more of a direct port of the original game rather than a remaster. Though it seems the delay is to help optimize it for PC, which would make sense considering the version’s belated release.
I'm not sure how much of that is true but a man can hope...

EDIT:

I don't know too much about marketing so my word doesn't mean much but I guess that they won't release it on PC day one because they fear that too many people will pirate the game. From a business point of view it makes sense to me.

I think FFXV is pretty much sure on PC, it's not binded to a single console, it's costing a lot of money so SE needs to recover them.
I think it will release later on PC, like one year or so, just to grab some double-dippers on the way.

* This.

Using a mod/trainer to stop time is the first thing that should be done on a PC walkthrough.

Agreed, if they really wanted to see how a Final Fantasy game could perform on Steam they need to have one ready at launch, not months or years later.

That said FFXV at launch isn't gonna happen so maybe one day they'll try it with a different title.

This would be awesome... but who knows how long it will take for that to happen. Tho i am pretty happy to see Square putting a lot of their library on PC.

wONDEr if modders can manipulate the timer?

Yeah someone will surely make a Cheat Engine table for the game. Maybe someone will also make a mod to add the Aerith costume.

To new players: don't worry about time, just ignore the clock. If you do everything as fast as you can you'll just save a few days and will have nothing to do on the last few days so you'll just sleep through them.

Stupid question: how many times you need to complete the game to see all contents? How much time is required for one playthrough ?

That's actually nice to hear. I pretty much forced myself to finish XIII on the 360. Still no idea what the hell really happened story wise.

I have XIII-2 on the PC and it seems much better but plays at like 10-15 fps on my 980ti so I can't really play it...

Something is really wrong there. What settings are you using? My GTX 580 has it close to locked at 30fps...

You can complete the game (main story from start to end) for the first time in about 20 hours if I remember correctly. I usually need less time than the average to finish the story so add a few hours to that number. You can also check the game's entry on HowLongToBeat (average of 37h for main story only)

On the second playthrough you can already play in Hard Mode and fight all the hardest bosses but it's hard to beat them and you probably will have to grind a bit.

I remember that I got the platinum trophy on the Hong Kong version of the game in under 50 hours so it's not really long (I haven't fought the final boss in hard mode though, that's hard).

Can't you play on Hard from the beginning?

Can't you play on Hard from the beginning?

I'm pretty sure you can't. You unlock it after beating the game once (even on easy mode).

In hard mode you also get stronger abilities as drops (Hard drops > Normal drops > Easy drops of course).

Nope. To be fair, you're woefully underpowered at the beginning of the game.

This too, it would be pointless. The end-game is like in the videos that were posted a couple pages ago but the early game will feel really slow if you have played the end-game at least once.

Umh, ok, guys. LR was one of my two titles to grab on D1 this year (the other is Resident Evil 0), I don't know if I'll do, because I'm finishing some games and I don't want buy the game and leave it here for some months. If Steam will propose a good discount like they did with other FF games on launch, I think I'll grab it with Steam credits.

GMG so far always offered the best prices for buying FINAL FANTASY games at launch (I think that was true even for XIV) because you can usually stack the preorder discount with a 20/23/25% voucher.

If you wait a few months after launch the game will very likely go 50% off on Steam too.

I don't know, I barely saw discounts for FF games on Steam sadly.

Yeah they're not that common, it's usually best to buy the game on GMG at launch.

Likely technical issues. I mean... the game struggled to hit 20fps on console...
I don't remember this game that bad on PS3 like everyone is saying. I know that everyone says it's completely garbage on X360 but was it that bad on PS3? I only remember a few framerate drops on certain cutscenes and during some battle against lots of monsters when using certain spells. It was fine most of the time though.
